Software Engineer II - UI/UX Product Engineering

Microsoft Education is hiring a Software Engineer II focused on AI-powered UI/UX product engineering for learning experiences across devices.

Responsibilities

• Build and ship frontier AI-powered product experiences across Web, Windows, and Mobile that support how students and educators learn, create, and reach their goals.
• Experiment with emerging AI technologies, models, agents, and interaction patterns, moving promising prototypes into production-quality experiences.
• Create responsive, accessible, inclusive user experiences with strong UX craftsmanship and consistent behavior across platforms and form factors.
• Develop efficient, reusable front-end systems and architecture to help the team build, test, deploy, and iterate complex product experiences.
• Collaborate with Product, Design, Applied Science, and engineering partners to understand customer needs and shape product and technical direction.
• Own features end to end, including discovery, prototyping, implementation, testing, experimentation, rollout, telemetry, production health, and iteration.
• Contribute across the stack when needed, including service/API integrations, data contracts, authentication, AI orchestration and grounding, experimentation, telemetry, and production diagnostics.
• Apply AI-assisted engineering tools to accelerate exploration, coding, testing, debugging, and learning while maintaining standards for quality, security, privacy, and responsible AI.
• Bring a frontier and growth mindset by sharing ideas, learning quickly, challenging existing approaches, and contributing to engineering excellence aligned with Microsoft’s culture and values.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or a related technical field and 2+ years of technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, JavaScript or Python.
• Or equivalent experience.
• Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements for this role.

Preferred qualifications

• 3+ years of software development experience building web applications using JavaScript or TypeScript with a modern frontend framework such as React.
• Professional experience designing, developing, and shipping high-quality software.
• Experience building responsive and accessible web applications using TypeScript, React, or similar technologies.
• Experience with object-oriented application/service development using C#, Java, C++, or similar languages.
• Experience designing or integrating APIs and working with distributed cloud services.
• Experience with public cloud services, including Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud.
• Experience using AI-assisted development tools (for coding, testing, debugging, code review, documentation, or workflow automation), including GitHub Copilot, GitHub Copilot CLI, Claude Code, or comparable tools.
• Ability to evaluate AI-generated output for correctness, maintainability, security, privacy, and licensing, with appropriate human review before use.
• Proven ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues in web applications or online services.
• Effective written and oral communication and collaboration skills.
• Discipline in applying modern software engineering practices, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and releasing.

Security screening

• Required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Compensation

• Typical U.S. base pay range for Software Engineering IC3: USD $102,100 - $202,200 per year
• Location-specific base pay (San Francisco Bay area and New York City metro): USD $133,800 - $219,200 per year
