Job Description

ATC seeks a UI/UX Engineer to design and maintain the WisVote user interface for Wisconsin’s statewide voter registration system. This onsite role in Madison, WI leverages the .NET Core framework with a strong emphasis on accessibility and collaboration with developers and election specialists, focusing on WCAG 2.1 AA compliance and cross-device usability.

Responsibilities

  • Design, contribute to development, and maintain the WisVote UI/UX for Wisconsin’s statewide voter registration system built on the .NET Core framework.
  • Create intuitive, efficient, and accessible designs that meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards while balancing usability and security requirements and preserving the familiar structure for system users.
  • Collaborate with developers and WisVote election specialists to translate functional needs into user-friendly designs, conduct accessibility testing, and ensure a consistent, responsive experience across devices and assistive technologies.
  • Adhere to the agency’s timekeeping system to ensure tasks align with federal funding guidelines or are properly accounted for under State funds.
  • Operate under the supervision of the IT Project Manager and IT Director within the Information Technology team, serving as a design resource for developers and election specialists.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years' experience creating low-fidelity wireframes and high-fidelity prototypes to visualize and test design concepts.
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience writing clear, concise, user-friendly interface text.
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience conducting user research, gathering qualitative and quantitative data, and applying insights to inform design decisions.
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience creating user personas, user flows, and journey maps to understand user needs and behaviors.

Description of Role

  • The Wisconsin Elections Commission is charged under Wisconsin Statutes with administering and enforcing Wisconsin's elections laws.
  • A core mission is to provide ongoing education, training, outreach, technical assistance, and advice to municipal clerks, county clerks, and local election inspectors, ensuring adherence to election laws and required procedures.
  • Another core function is to provide current and accurate information to the public and to various governmental and other organizations about the state's electoral processes, voting statistics, and trends.
  • This position reports to the IT Project Manager and IT Director, as part of the Information Technology team, and serves as a resource for developers and election specialists.
  • The role is responsible for designing, helping to develop, and maintaining the WisVote UI/UX, which is built on the .NET Core framework.
  • WisVote serves as the state’s central database of voter and election information and is the primary tool for local election officials to administer elections. The role involves creating intuitive, efficient, and accessible designs that meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards and align usability and security requirements, while preserving the overall structure familiar to system users.
  • The designer will collaborate with developers and WisVote election specialists to translate functional needs into user-friendly designs, perform accessibility testing, and ensure the rebuilt application delivers a consistent, responsive experience across devices and assistive technologies.
  • Compliance with the agency’s timekeeping system is required to ensure tasks performed qualify under federal funding guidelines or that work representing State initiatives is properly accounted for using State funds.
