Manager UI/UX Design Advisory Services
Job Description
Optum seeks a Manager of Advisory Services for UI/UX design in Eden Prairie, MN, with remote work options, to guide AI-enabled design initiatives across discovery, prototyping, and delivery within digital transformation programs.
Responsibilities
- Partner with product owners, fellow designers, data/analytics teams, and engineering during discovery and requirements sessions
- Contribute to strategy and roadmap discussions
- Identify actionable opportunities to embed AI into discovery, design workflows, research synthesis, prototyping, and delivery to boost speed, quality, and team effectiveness
- Create design artifacts informed by analytics, user research, and industry best practices
- Utilize AI-powered tools to explore directions, generate and compare options, summarize research inputs, and accelerate early-stage artifacts while applying human judgment and validation before final recommendations
- Ideate and present multiple design solutions
- Regularly share work and refine designs based on stakeholder feedback
- Participate in design reviews and offer constructive feedback to teammates
- For final UI work, define layout, typography, color, padding, and spacing aligned with brand requirements (Optum, UHC, or client brands) and source needed media
- Present clearly how the problem is solved, how users access the experience, and how they progress through it
- Manage timelines, milestones, and internal processes to ensure timely feature delivery
- Deeply understand client design patterns and apply them appropriately
- Support research initiatives by preparing and building prototypes for user testing
- Collaborate with product, engineering, data, and compliance to design AI-enabled experiences that are transparent, explainable, accessible, and aligned with responsible AI, privacy, security, and healthcare risk considerations
- Leverage market insights to understand customer needs and identify opportunities to improve current offerings
- Support user research activities (interviews, focus groups, surveys, etc) by organizing, planning, and executing to inform designs and strategic decisions
- Nurture client relationships and assist business development efforts
- Develop knowledge in emerging technologies and improve team operational practices
- Continuously evaluate emerging AI tools, design accelerators, and workflows, recommending practical integration without compromising quality, brand standards, accessibility, or trust
- Translate ambiguous business, user, and technical needs into design recommendations, including AI or automation implications for UX
- Serve as an early adopter of industry trends
- Lead projects, shape strategies, and manage change
- Support sales opportunities and proposal discussions in partnership with leadership
- Create user personas, journey maps, and other artifacts to communicate research findings
- Conduct user interviews, surveys, and usability tests to gain insights into user needs and behaviors
- Be accountable for delivering performance against expectations and achieving MBO goals
- Analyze qualitative and quantitative data to identify patterns and trends
- Develop reusable AI prompts, templates, design review checklists, and documentation practices that promote consistent, responsible, and efficient AI use across engagements
Requirements
- Five-plus years of experience in digital design with a portfolio demonstrating web and mobile experience design
- Five-plus years delivering user-centered design solutions that meet business objectives
- Five-plus years crafting original design concepts, including wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity mockups
- Five-plus years using design tools such as Adobe XD, Sketch, Figma, or similar software to develop distinctive user interfaces
- Two-plus years creating and executing research strategies
- One-plus year working with AI-enabled design, research, content, and productivity tools, applying them to accelerate work

Preferred qualifications
- Experience creating prompt libraries, reusable AI workflow patterns, or team enablement materials to help others apply AI tools consistently
- Experience or certification in Design Thinking, Human-centered design, PMP, Six Sigma, Change management, SAFe
- Experience working within an agile delivery model
- Familiarity with accessibility standards (eg WCAG) and best practices
