Assistant Professor in Graphic Design
Job Description
Join the School of Design at the University of Central Oklahoma in a full-time, non-tenure track Assistant Professor role focused on undergraduate graphic design instruction and departmental service.
Responsibilities
- Teach students and evaluate student performance
- Maintain department and student records in accordance with university policies
- Adhere to the university’s educational philosophy
- Collaborate with colleagues and professional peers
- Participate in faculty meetings related to faculty responsibilities
- Prepare departmental reports as requested
- Deliver undergraduate instruction in courses including Design Foundations, Computer Graphics, Typography, Branding, UI/UX, Illustration, and other graphic design courses as needed
- Collaborate and communicate with faculty, staff, and students within the College of Fine Arts and Design
Essential Department Functions
- Academic responsibilities in a School of Design offering B.F.A. degrees in Graphic and Interior Design
- Contribute through department participation, with emphasis on creative industry engagement and social engagement
Requirements
- Undergraduate-level teaching is expected
- Earned terminal degree awarded by a regionally accredited or internationally recognized institution in the field specified in the position announcement (exceptions require Academic Affairs approval)
- Earned MFA or PhD in Graphic Design, Illustration, or a related field requiring a minimum of 60 graduate hours
- MFA or PhD candidates with degrees in progress may apply if the terminal degree is obtained and submitted by the time of employment
Preferred Qualifications
- Minimum one year of university teaching experience
- Demonstrated excellence in teaching
- Demonstrated experience in graphic design and illustration
- Expertise in drawing/illustration and graphic design, including knowledge of:
- Foundational hand and digital skills
- Drawing and illustration techniques
- Industry-standard software (e.g., Adobe Creative Cloud, Procreate)
- Print and digital production techniques, technologies, and file management
- Typography
- Brand design
- Video and/or motion graphics
- Interaction design (UI/UX)
Knowledge and Skills
- Ability to teach courses in graphic design, design foundations, illustration, digital and print production, digital design, and emerging technology
Tools / Technologies
- Adobe Creative Cloud
- Procreate
