Web Designer (Docusaurus)
Job Description
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs invites a Web Designer who excels with Docusaurus to design, build, and maintain documentation portals that serve Veterans and VA teams. This remote role supports federal projects while upholding VA branding and accessibility standards. You will partner with product owners, content writers, developers, and UX stakeholders to deliver accessible, branded web experiences that are clear and easy to navigate.
Responsibilities
- Design, configure, and maintain Docusaurus based documentation sites and portals.
- Shape page layouts, sidebars, navigation, and content structure to support intuitive content discovery.
- Develop and maintain reusable page templates and component documentation pages for common UI components, onboarding guides, and knowledge base articles.
- Deliver clean, responsive, and accessible UI layouts for documentation and informational sites.
- Apply typography, color, spacing, and layout principles in alignment with VA and federal branding standards.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to translate requirements and wireframes into production ready Docusaurus pages.
- Ensure designs and implementations meet Section 508 and WCAG accessibility standards in a government context.
- Design with Veterans and VA staff in mind, prioritizing clarity, readability, and usability.
- Partner with product owners and QA to test accessibility, responsiveness, and usability across devices and browsers.
- Organize content into intuitive hierarchies, navigation menus, and documentation groupings to improve discoverability.
- Support content owners in migrating, updating, and refactoring documentation to align with new structures.
- Collaborate within federal processes, documentation requirements, and review cycles, including Agile ceremonies and design reviews.
- Provide clear documentation and handoffs for changes to content, navigation, and UI patterns.
Requirements
- Hands-on experience designing and maintaining Docusaurus sites, including configuring sidebars, navigation, and routing.
- Experience working with Markdown/MDX content, layout components, and themes.
- Strong web and UI design skills demonstrated by a portfolio of clean, responsive, and accessible layouts.
- Proficiency in typography, color, and spacing to create legible and engaging interfaces.
- Solid understanding of Section 508, WCAG, and accessibility best practices for government-facing sites.
- Proficiency with HTML5, CSS3, and modern layout techniques such as flexbox and grid.
- Basic understanding of React and JavaScript concepts (components, props, state, JSX) to collaborate effectively within Docusaurus.
- Experience creating or updating documentation portals, design systems, or component libraries.
- Ability to work effectively with federal stakeholders, navigating feedback loops, approvals, and documentation requirements.
- Clear communication of design decisions to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Strong eye for detail with focus on performance, maintainability, and consistency across pages and sections.
