Job Description

The Visual Design Manager leads the visual design direction across client engagements and internal projects, shaping brand identities and design systems while applying AI to accelerate concepting and production. This role also contributes to client delivery, business development, and the growth of the design team.

Responsibilities

  • Direct the visual design effort on engagements from concept to delivery, ensuring design quality, cohesive aesthetics, and timely milestones.
  • Translate abstract briefs, brand strategy, and audience insights into clear, compelling visual languages as a strategic thinker.
  • Establish and defend a high standard of visual craft in brand identities, design systems, motion, typography, illustration, and digital experiences.
  • Balance vision with hands-on work by shaping creative direction while producing high-quality output alongside the team.
  • Utilize AI tools to speed concepting, iteration, and production, demonstrating how these tools enhance creativity without replacing it.
  • Act as a leading creative voice in client discussions, presenting visual perspective and translating design rationale into strategic narratives under pressure.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of experience in visual design across multiple industries, brand types, platforms, and contexts.
  • 4+ years leading visual design engagements end-to-end, from concept and visual strategy through production-ready delivery.
  • 4+ years directing the creation of brand identities, design systems, typography, motion, illustration, and digital UI with a consistent visual voice.
  • 4+ years producing high-fidelity visual work with meticulous attention to detail, including pixel-perfect deliverables and developer-ready specs.
  • 3+ years directly managing or coaching visual designers, with a track record of developing contributors into stronger, more independent practitioners.
  • 3+ years in agile, cross-functional environments collaborating with product designers, product managers, engineers, and strategists to deliver cohesive experiences.
  • 3+ years delivering high-caliber visual design work shipped at scale, addressing complex product or brand challenges with measurable impact.
  • 3+ years making user-centered visual design decisions with a strong UX understanding that guides users intuitively while conveying a cohesive brand perspective.
  • 3+ years building and contributing to scalable design systems that ensure visual consistency across products, platforms, and channels.
  • 3+ years embedding AI tools and workflows into visual design practices from concept to rapid iteration, modeling AI-enabled approaches for a team.
  • 3+ years hands-on experience with design tools such as Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, Claude Design, and relevant motion and illustration tools or AI design tools; this is not purely managerial.
  • 3+ years demonstrating facilitation skills and the ability to present visual strategy and design rationale to senior client stakeholders under pressure.

The Work

This role carries accountability across three dimensions, guiding strategy, execution, and impact across engagements and teams.

Bonus Points If You Have

  • Experience across adjacent areas such as brand strategy, service design, or content design, or a self-driven expansion of skills.
  • Participation in practice-level initiatives, including ways of working, craft assets, onboarding, or community forums.
  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in visual design, visual communications, graphic design, fine art, or a related field.
  • Background in management consulting, a creative agency, or a professional services environment.
  • Contributions to external thought leadership, such as publishing creative POVs, speaking at events, or representing the practice in the design community.
