Staff Product Designer
Job Description
Plug Technologies Inc is hiring a Staff Product Designer to shape end-to-end product experiences across consumer, dealer, and partner surfaces. This is a senior individual contributor role for someone who values craft, design governance, and real customer evidence, while working in an AI-forward workflow alongside product and engineering.
Location: Los Angeles, CA (onsite), Sawtelle (between Santa Monica and West LA). Employment type: Full-time. Reports to: SVP, Product & Technology.
Compensation: $194,000 to $229,000 per year. Salary ranges reflect independent, third-party benchmarking against national compensation data and may vary based on experience, specialized skills, training and qualifications, business needs, and prevailing market conditions. Ranges are reviewed periodically and may be adjusted.
What you will do
- Own end-to-end design for OEM, commercial partner, and dealer-facing surfaces, from early concept through shipped, polished product.
- Set the bar for taste and craft, acting as the calibration point for the org.
- Define how Plug builds scalable design workflows, including the design system and prototyping and handoff practices, and how tools like Claude Design support fast shipping without drifting on brand, craft, or customer needs.
- Lead customer research directly through interviews, contextual inquiry, and usability testing to build first-hand understanding of how partners and dealers work.
- Apply an AI-forward mindset across product, engineering, and design in an AI-native workflow.
- Help teams move quickly with AI while maintaining strong design governance.
- Translate complex B2B workflows (inventory processing, bidding, API-driven integrations) into interfaces that feel simple, fast, and trustworthy for professional daily use.
- Drive innovation in how the team works with AI, not only what gets designed.
- Enable independent design execution, with you serving as the final say and taste-maker.
- Scale your own impact through AI-forward operations in close partnership with product and engineering.
- Partner with product managers and engineers from problem framing through delivery, participating in trade-offs rather than only receiving handoff inputs.
- Design and iterate using real usage data, session replays, and experiment results alongside qualitative research.
- Represent the customer voice in roadmap and prioritization discussions using evidence rather than opinion.
- Work directly with high-value external partners (OEMs and commercial accounts) to understand workflows and constraints.
What you bring
- 6+ years in product design, with a strong track record designing B2B SaaS products for professional or enterprise users.
- Excellent customer research skills, with proactive ability to uncover what people actually need.
- Experience turning complex workflows (dashboards, admin tools, partner platforms, marketplaces) into interfaces that feel simple.
- Comfort working at the intersection of design, product, and engineering, with strong opinions held loosely.
- Hands-on, shipped experience building with AI tools, including the ability to explain how they change design work. The process includes showing something you have built.
- Judgment about when to spend craft and the ability to distinguish craft-critical surfaces from work that should move fast.
- Builder mentality, energized by broad ownership in an environment where roles are fluid and boundaries between product, engineering, and design blur.
- Strong communication skills to present work, defend decisions with evidence, and influence cross-functionally.
- A portfolio demonstrating both craft and process, including how you arrived at the solution.
- Authorization to work in the US for any employer.
- Prior experience in automotive, EV, marketplace, or fintech systems is a plus.
