Product Designer
Job Description
Outset is looking for an experienced Product Designer to join a small team and take ownership of meaningful parts of the product. This role has a significant focus on the Digital Twins / Simulations Lab, where the work centers on translating deep technical complexity into interfaces that feel intuitive, legible, and trustworthy for researchers.
Based in San Francisco, CA with an onsite setup, you will move end to end on product surfaces, guiding early concepts through launch and ongoing iteration. You will work closely with customers, participate in conversations, and turn feedback into design decisions quickly, while maintaining a high bar for craft in the shipped experience.
What you’ll do
- Own product surfaces end to end, with a central role in Outset’s Simulations work.
- Take projects from early concepts through launch and iteration.
- Simplify technical complexity into clear, trustworthy product experiences.
- Study how simulations and other underlying systems actually work, then design interfaces that help researchers understand the output.
- Stay close to customers by sitting in on customer conversations and reading feedback.
- Use customer input as a primary driver for design decisions.
- Maintain a high bar for craft, producing wireframes, interaction designs, and high-fidelity visuals, with attention to detail in production.
- Know what not to build by challenging features that add complexity without adding commensurate value.
- Help the team cut scope down to what matters most.
What you bring
- 5+ years of product design industry experience, ideally including time as the lead or founding designer on a product or major product area.
- Experience in 0 to 1 product work or an early-stage environment where direction changed often.
- Genuine curiosity about technically complex systems, backed by a record of designing clear products on top of them.
- Comfort working directly with customers and treating feedback as primary input to design.
- Exceptional communication skills.
- Strong but loosely held opinions on design and product.
- A flexible approach, since the team does not have many explicit requirements and exceptional candidates might bend these rules.
Tools and technologies
- Figma
- Codex
- Claude Design
Preferred qualifications
- Comfort designing in code, including prototyping with real data or shipping frontend changes with engineers.
- Experience building enterprise software.
- Experience building in the research industry.
Compensation
$180,000 - $220,000 USD per year.
