Job Description

The Digital Designer role at Kaizen Labs focuses on crafting landing pages, building robust visual systems, and shaping the web presence for government-focused software. This onsite position in New York, NY offers a salary range of USD 135,000 to 165,000 per year.

Responsibilities

  • Design and deploy landing pages, campaign sites, and entry points for agency platforms that engage both agency stakeholders and mission-driven talent, shaping a first impression that fosters trust and continued engagement.
  • Construct the constituent-facing visual system, including typographic voice, motion language, and illustration style, so every agency application bears a consistent Kaizen signature and offers a cohesive experience across services.
  • Develop Kaizen's own web presence, including the marketing site, launch moments, flyers, and campaign work to persuade agency stakeholders and mission-driven talent that Kaizen is the right team to work with.
  • Deliver production-ready work in code, owning the implementation rather than handing off designs to engineers.
  • Leverage AI-native creative tools to achieve higher output and quality, enabling capabilities beyond what a smaller team would typically reach.
  • Collaborate directly with Sales and Business Development on federal pitch materials, demo environments, and proposal assets where visual quality supports the close.
  • Partner with the Design Lead, CEO, and engineering teams to ensure product and brand feel like they originate from a single vision, sharing work early, shipping often, and treating feedback as actionable signals.

Requirements

  • A portfolio with real range across web design that is both beautiful and functional, motion work with craft, and illustrations that feel authentic rather than stock.
  • A track record of end-to-end shipping, using advanced tools such as Claude Code to pursue ambitious ideas rather than limiting scope to what can be handed off.
  • Strong command of web-native design, including layouts, typography, and interactions in a browser, with an understanding of how these elements behave online.
  • Fluency with motion and animation tools (After Effects, Rive, Lottie, Jitter, or equivalents), applied to clarify rather than clutter experiences.
  • Fluency with AI creative tools such as Midjourney, Runway, or Firefly, used as genuine creative leverage.
  • Experience building or significantly evolving a brand system from first principles, translating values and a roadmap into a design that surprises and elevates the work.

The Role

Kaizen is entering a moment of heightened visibility as we deploy an AI-enabled platform designed to scale government-focused services. The Digital Designer will craft landing pages that engage agency stakeholders, develop motion and illustration work that brings government software to life, and establish a visual identity that signals forward momentum. This role is not a production hand-off; it requires owning the design, shipping it directly, and shaping how the world sees Kaizen.

Strong candidates may also

  • Have designed for B2G, B2B, or mission-driven organizations where credibility carries as much weight as aesthetics.
  • Have experience with USWDS or a comparable government design standard and have informed opinions about it.
  • Have a clear point of view on what great government-facing design looks like and why such design is rare.

Don’t apply if

  • You do not believe in Kaizen's mission to scale design across all government agencies, or you lack alignment with mission, purpose, and quality.
  • You need a detailed brief and finished brand guidelines before producing work; we are building both and you will help shape them.
  • You view AI tools as a threat to craft; this team is AI-native by default.
  • Your work prioritizes visual polish in isolation over performance in real use cases.
  • You prefer iterating within an existing system rather than building one from scratch.
  • You want to hand off work to others when it is time to ship, rather than delivering directly to end users such as farmers seeking loans, service members seeking housing, and immigrants navigating case management.
