UI/UX Specialist

Synergy Business Innovation & Solutions (Synergy BIS) is seeking a UI/UX Specialist to support the United States Coast Guard (USCG). In this role, you’ll bridge design and functionality to shape user-centered application interfaces end-to-end, translating complex, mission-relevant requirements into digital experiences that are intuitive and performant. The position operates within a combined Agile team environment, working across the full software development lifecycle.

Role overview

You’ll design end-to-end user experiences that start with research and information architecture and move through wireframes, interactive prototypes, and production-ready UI. A key focus is converting complex, data-heavy operational workflows into clear and efficient interfaces while preserving the underlying decision logic. You’ll also help drive consistency across multiple applications through a shared design system and reusable component library.

Responsibilities

• Design end-to-end user experiences, including research, information architecture, wireframes, interactive prototypes, and production-ready UI.
• Translate complex, data-heavy operational workflows into clear interfaces without oversimplifying decision logic.
• Create and maintain a shared design system and component library for consistent visual and interaction patterns across applications.
• Partner with developers to support faithful implementation, providing specifications, assets, and design tokens aligned to frontend frameworks.
• Conduct user research and usability testing with client and end-user stakeholders, including contextual inquiry with operational, non-desk personnel, and apply findings to iterative improvements.
• Gather, clarify, and document design requirements with clients and subject-matter experts who may not be familiar with design or software terminology.
• Design with accessibility in mind using Section 508 and WCAG 2.1 AA as baseline standards.
• Participate in Agile/Scrum ceremonies and collaborate throughout the full software development lifecycle.

Requirements

• Demonstrated experience (or ability to discuss in depth) designing enterprise, operational, or similarly data-dense applications.
• Proficiency in Figma (required); familiarity with tools such as Penpot or Framer is a plus.
• Strong foundation in interaction design, information architecture, and visual/UI design.
• Experience building and maintaining design systems and reusable component libraries.
• Solid understanding of HTML, CSS, and responsive design principles, plus the ability to communicate effectively with developers.
• Experience conducting user research and usability testing, including turning findings into design artifacts such as journey maps and task flows.
• Working knowledge of Section 508 / WCAG 2.1 AA.
• Knowledge of the software development lifecycle and Agile methodologies.
• Comfort with ambiguity and shifting priorities common in government environments, with patience and communication skills to build trust with stakeholders who may be new to design and software workflows.
• Strong collaboration across technical and non-technical audiences, including comfort giving and receiving feedback.
• Ability to use AI tools tactically to accelerate research synthesis, prototyping, or documentation, using good judgment for an appropriate government environment.

Preferred qualifications

• Experience designing for Angular applications and familiarity with Angular Material or similar component frameworks.
• Ability to implement front-end designs (HTML/CSS/SCSS) and comfort working in Angular templates.
• Experience designing geospatial, mapping, dashboard, or other complex data-visualization interfaces.
• Experience in mission-critical or high-stakes domains such as defense, logistics, healthcare, finance, or emergency operations.
