Staff Product Designer

As a Staff Product Designer at LegalZoom, you will solve product problems end to end, creating production-ready prototypes and components that can be handed off directly to engineering. The role blends strong design judgment with build fluency using AI development tools, with remote work supported alongside required in-person collaboration in a hybrid setup.

What You’ll Do

• Develop frameworks that clarify ambiguous problem spaces, exploring multiple product directions through genuine alternatives before converging.
• Build and ship functional, production-quality prototypes that validate real interactions with real data rather than static screens.
• Move features from requirements to shipped experiences using AI development tools, and contribute to front-end implementation when it improves the customer experience.
• Identify gaps in the design system and introduce new patterns by building and documenting components that integrate with the system’s architecture.
• Review CI/CD checks including visual regression, accessibility, and token audits prior to work reaching customers.
• Assess whether AI-generated or AI-assisted output preserves intended design quality, and refine it directly to close the loop without routing through a separate review.
• Instrument shipped work so real usage informs the next design iteration, including how it performed beyond what was delivered.
• Support cross-functional roadmap trade-offs by balancing speed and quality while using AI to compress the build-test-learn loop without lowering the evidence standard.
• Shape how AI-powered features calibrate user trust, including when to show confidence, when confirmation is required, and when alternatives should be surfaced.
• Mentor peers and raise the team’s craft bar through feedback and quality-focused standards.
• Establish and increase the quality standards the team builds against.
• Align with partners across product, engineering, and brand so what ships connects cleanly across domains.

Required Qualifications

• Strong design fundamentals, with the ability to defend direction using evidence rather than instinct, and to explore meaningfully different approaches before converging.
• Comfort designing from ambiguity, including working when a spec or documentation is not yet available.
• Fluency building with AI development tools (Claude Code or equivalent) to take concepts to working, production-quality prototypes.
• Front-end implementation fluency, including the judgment to determine when AI-generated code preserves design intent, and the ability to connect components to real data and APIs rather than static mocks.
• Experience with Git and GitHub workflows, including branches, pull requests, and code review as part of the shipping process.
• Ability to use prompt and context scaffolding to keep AI output consistent and reduce drift across a project.
• Experience closing gaps in the design system beyond simply applying existing patterns.
• Clear communication and the ability to influence stakeholders who do not report directly to you.
• Strategic thinking that connects current decisions to where the product and team are headed.

Salary and Compensation

The salary range is USD 140,500 - 249,700 per year. Actual compensation will depend on geographic location, work experience, education, skill level, and other business and organizational needs. The package may also include an annual bonus, incentive bonus and/or restricted stock units.

Location and Work Arrangement

This role is based in Los Angeles, CA and follows a hybrid model. LegalZoom supports a remote-friendly environment, and while the position is remote, in-person collaboration at company offices is encouraged and at times required. This hybrid position will work remotely as well as onsite in Sherman Oaks, Mountain View, or Austin offices. Employees can collaborate in offices across Austin, Beaverton, Frisco, Los Angeles Metro, and San Francisco Bay Area, with onsite events and lunches.
