Job Description

Modern Classrooms Project is hiring a Product Designer to shape the end-to-end user experience of its software, prototype key flows, and establish an in-house design system.

Responsibilities

  • Refine the end-to-end user experience across teacher, student, and administrator journeys
  • Map user journeys to define information architecture and design paths that stay clear as the product grows
  • Identify where users get confused, rushed, or stuck, then design improvements into those moments
  • Wireframe and prototype before implementation:
    • Create quick wireframes so scope and behavior are debated cheaply before code is shipped
    • Build and validate high-fidelity, clickable prototypes for high-stakes flows
  • Build and own the design system:
    • Create and maintain a documented component library
    • Ground components in MCP’s brand and extend for product needs
    • Enable engineers to compose using consistent parts instead of reinventing patterns
  • Bring product design efforts in-house:
    • Help establish design best practices to ensure what gets built meets teachers’ and students’ needs
    • Work closely with founders, senior leaders, product managers, and engineering
    • Support the transition from external design partners to an internal design operation

Requirements

  • Hands-on execution:
    • Take a flow from wireframe to high-fidelity to clickable prototype
    • Put designs in front of real users to observe struggles and successes
    • Ship pixels, not only opinions
  • Systems thinking:
    • Strong understanding of information architecture and design systems
    • Build scalable components using auto-layout, variables, and variants
    • Create high-fidelity clickable prototypes that other designers can easily consume
    • Prevent the product from becoming a maze of nested menus as features pile up
  • Research and validation:
    • Run usability tests and learn from watching users work through tasks
    • Curiosity about behavior over defensiveness about designs
  • Interface writing:
    • Treat interface copy as part of the design
    • Improve clarity and tone for items like button labels, error messages, and feedback for a struggling 10-year-old
  • Ability to design under real-world constraints:
    • Accessibility, color contrast, touch-target sizing, and school-issued devices
    • Account for classroom realities like shaky classroom Wi-Fi
    • Design web apps and learning experiences grounded in cognitive science learning principles
  • Motivation to create impact in education and for young people

Technologies

  • auto-layout
  • variables
  • variants
  • HTML/CSS/JS
  • web apps

Compensation and Benefits

  • Salaried position: $130,000-$160,000 gross salary per year
  • Employer-sponsored health insurance through CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield
  • Employer-sponsored dental and vision insurance and ancillary benefits through MetLife
  • Participation in Vanguard 403(b) deferred-compensation plan with 3% employer match
  • Paid Time Off including vacation/PTO (20 days), paid holidays, paid parental leave, sick and safe paid time off, “Me Days”, and the ability to earn paid Comp time off
  • Annual budget for MCP-funded Continuous Learning for requested program(s) (available after 6 months of continuous full-time employment)
  • FSA and Dependent Care FSA access
  • 1x Salary Life Insurance company-paid coverage
  • Access to Wishbone Pet Insurance Benefit
  • Ability to work remotely and to set your own hours (within reason)
