Job Description
The College of Engineering at the University of Michigan is seeking a Web Content Specialist to evaluate and improve University of Michigan web properties. This hybrid role focuses on updating content and refining designs to strengthen SEO and usability while aligning every change with accessibility and functionality standards set by Communications & Marketing.
Working within the College Engineering team, you will serve as a key contact for stakeholders while helping plan incremental updates and broader improvement recommendations. The position is part time, with weekly hours (20 to 32) determined through mutual agreement, and it follows a 12-month term-limited schedule.
Responsibilities
- Update web pages using WordPress and Google Sites.
- Apply improvements to information architecture, website structure, and light design or UX enhancements to improve user navigation.
- Refresh outdated content by correcting broken links, fixing content errors, and ensuring information remains current and accurate.
- Ensure all web properties meet University and federal accessibility standards, specifically WCAG 2.1 AA.
- Using provided content guidelines and keywords, identify SEO/GEO and accessibility issues, propose solutions, and implement appropriate resolutions.
- Maintain consistency with branding, voice, and tone guidelines across updated pages.
- Lead implementation of both incremental web updates and broader improvement recommendations as the primary point of contact for stakeholder engagement.
- Provide technical rationale and milestone updates to stakeholder units.
- Evaluate courses of action for site improvements, consult with Communications & Marketing experts, and make independent decisions within the scope of responsibilities.
- Collaborate with a project manager to balance priorities and timelines across multiple projects.
- Direct and train unit partners on web content best practices.
- Tailor existing documentation and guidelines so others without web expertise can maintain quality in design, accessibility, SEO/GEO, and communications standards.
- Stay current with developments in web accessibility and recommend proactive steps to maintain compliance.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in UX, Writing, Marketing, Communications, or a related field, and/or equivalent work experience.
- Experience working with a Content Management System (CMS).
- Basic UX training, including knowledge of accessibility (additional training will be provided).
- Basic understanding of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) concepts and best practices (additional training will be provided).
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Clear communication and writing skills.
- Proven ability to set and manage priorities for self and projects, handle multiple assignments, meet expected deadlines, and work flexibly and professionally.
- Demonstrated experience applying UX best practices in a web environment.

Appointment Details
- Location: Ann Arbor, MI (hybrid); Ann Arbor Campus; regular status
- Job type: Part-Time
- Schedule: 20 to 32 hours per week, with weekly hours mutually determined
- Salary: USD 30,000 - 48,000 per year, prorated based on posted full-time salary of $60,000
- Term: 12-month term-limited position; possible six-month extension based on workload and funding availability
- FLSA status: Exempt
Modes of Work
- This position may be eligible for remote and/or flexible work at the discretion of the hiring department.
- Flexible work agreements are reviewed annually and subject to change based on department business needs.
- The position is classified as fully remote; however, the selected candidate may choose to work from the C&M Offices on North Campus if desired.
