Software Engineer, UI/UX
Job Description
The Software Engineer, UI/UX at BurnBot, Inc. owns operator-facing software that supports mission planning, live supervision, mapping, alarms and alerts, and fleet tooling. The work focuses on production front-end delivery and validating usability with operators during real field burn conditions.
Role Focus
You will build and refine interfaces for operators that remain legible and effective under pressure. This includes live telemetry and video presentation, operator controls, and machine state visualization that support day-to-day decision making in mission workflows.
Key Responsibilities
- Operator interface development: create live UI experiences for telemetry, video, machine state, and controls designed to stay readable under real operating stress
- Mission planning and mapping: support drawing treatment boundaries, setting plans, and enabling review of what was actually treated
- Alarms and alerts design: define what interrupts an operator, how loudly it signals, and what actions the alert requires
- Hands-on UX work: perform your own UX through crew research, sketches, and building the resulting interface
- Design system ownership: maintain a coherent set of tooling as the fleet and team grow
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years building production front-end software, with strong TypeScript and React (or equivalent)
- Experience working with real-time and streaming data in the browser, such as telemetry, video, or live machine state
- Mapping and geospatial UI experience using Mapbox, Leaflet, deck.gl, or similar
- Genuine design sense, including the ability to turn a vague need into an interface operators can use
- Testing discipline appropriate for software that runs next to fire
- Willingness to sit with operators in the field and observe interface failures directly
Technologies
- TypeScript, React
- Mapbox, Leaflet, deck.gl
- ROS web bridges, WebRTC
Salary and Location
Location: South San Francisco, CA (onsite). Compensation: USD 115,000 to 170,000 per year. Minimum experience: 5 years.
Benefits
- Equity: Incentive Stock Options
- Health coverage: health, dental, and vision
- Time off: flexible paid time off
Nice to Have
- Robotics, teleoperation, or industrial HMI interface experience
- ROS web bridges, WebRTC, or low-latency video experience
- Safety-critical or high-consequence UI experience
- Design background, either before or alongside engineering
- Wildland fire, forestry, or land management background
How the Team Works
This role is based onsite in South San Francisco. Design, build, and testing occur in one building, and proximity to the machines is central to the work. There is flexibility within the onsite requirement: you manage your calendar by working the hours when you’re sharpest, and you can go remote on heads-down days.
You should also expect a few days each month in the field across California, Oregon, and Washington, including time spent watching your interface run during live burn conditions.
