Senior Product Designer
Job Description
Senior Product Designer role at Garmin’s U.S. headquarters in the Greater Kansas City area, onsite in Olathe, KS.
Responsibilities
- Lead design direction across multiple projects, with responsibility for project planning to support timely completion of goals and objectives
- Contribute significantly to evaluating the feasibility of project goals and objectives
- Partner with team leads and management to shape feature vision and visualize and communicate that direction
- Act as subject matter expert for a key feature or technology and communicate user experience best practices for that area
- Research and help solve problems that span multiple groups and disciplines
- Provide expert feedback to team members within areas of design strength
- Lead discussions with partners and potential clients focused on user experience design
- Mentor less experienced Product Designers (Product Designer 1 and Product Designer 2)
- Advance design research for new products or markets by identifying research opportunities, creating research protocols, and translating findings into solutions
- Provide input to product design plans and concept documents
- Apply awareness of business needs as they relate to design
- Independently determine general approaches and specific solutions for technical design problems
- Stay current on design trends, tools, and technologies, and advocate for user-centric design principles and best practices
- Communicate work status clearly and provide visibility to a supervisor
- Exemplify Garmin’s Mission Statement and Quality Policy, with proactive work to improve Garmin’s image and culture
- Design and deliver user experiences for Garmin’s online properties efficiently and effectively
- Communicate research and design ideas using mockups, storyboards, presentations, and documentation
- Develop creative, user-friendly, and globally consistent design patterns and guidelines for the Web Design System
- Partner with design leadership, marketing, IT, global teams, and stakeholders to shape design direction
- Collaborate across product design, development, and management teams to deliver high-quality solutions
- Document web components with high attention to detail to ensure consistency across web products
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Interactive Design, Human Factors, Visual Design, or equivalent curriculum teaching user-centered design principles AND minimum 5 years relevant work experience
- OR minimum 9 years equivalent combination of education and relevant experience
- Excellent academics (cumulative GPA ≥ 3.0 as a general rule) with the ability to apply learned knowledge effectively
- Proficiency with UX software tools such as Figma and Sketch, plus interactive prototyping tools
- Proven track record leading design direction for multiple projects, including effective project planning that supports timely completion of goals and objectives
- Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills

- Experience working closely with Technical Artists and/or Developers
- Ability to provide examples of overcoming technical limitations and constraints in novel ways
- Proven lead designer for at least one shipped product
