Senior Product Designer

Join HI-LEX CONTROLS INC as a Senior Product Designer in a collaborative, open seating setting where you can shift your work location daily if needed. You’ll work in an office environment with normal noise from cellphones, group conversations, and virtual meetings, while partnering across functions to create product designs that support performance and reliability.

This onsite role is based in Rochester Hills, MI 48309 and is designed for experienced designers who enjoy turning sketches and customer inputs into complete 3D models and fully dimensioned drawings. With 10+ years of drafting and design experience, you’ll contribute to new and revised designs, feasibility studies, RFQ drawing packages, and design modifications that help address field concerns.

What you’ll do

• Create new and revised product designs using 3D CAD systems.
• Produce completed layouts and final product design starting from simple sketches.
• Run feasibility studies (including packaging studies and glass drop studies) based on customer supplied data.
• Support design and tolerance stack studies to help ensure robust outcomes.
• Prepare drawing packages and concepts for RFQ’s, including quality drawings focused on low cost design and quick timing.
• Apply documented Engineering and Design standards, including Lessons Learned.
• Recommend and implement changes to resolve field concerns, evaluate prototypes, and adjust designs to improve product performance and reliability.
• Assist in analysis of problem areas and recommend solutions.
• Make design suitability decisions using knowledge of specified product materials and production processes.
• Recommend material selection for products and components.
• Confer with customers as required to discuss design problem areas and verify product requirements are met.
• Instruct CAD detailers on requirements, tolerances, GD&T, and standard drafting practices.
• Promote an associate relations environment aligned with long-term management objectives.

What you bring

• 2-year degree in engineering or computer aided drawing/design (equivalent preferred).
• Knowledge of HI-LEX core CAD systems, including Catia V5 and NX.
• GD&T knowledge.
• 10 or more years of drafting and design experience.
• Experience with design/packaging as it pertains to systems and products.
• Knowledge of production process characteristics.
• Product development and design experience.
• Ability in 3D software modeling.
• Experience in 2D drawing development with dimensional layouts.
• Ability to lift up to 20 pounds.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Time management to complete tasks aligned to program success.
• Problem solving and critical thinking, with adaptability and continuous improvement.
