Product Designer I
Job Description
ICON is hiring a UX/Product Designer I in Austin, TX to lead end-to-end UX for a core BuildOS product area.
Responsibilities
- Own end-to-end UX work for tools that connect users to ICON construction technology, from discovery research through design handoff
- Run customer interviews, map complex workflows, and translate findings into actionable design work
- Create wireframes, interaction flows, and interactive prototypes in Figma (or a similar tool)
- Test prototypes with real users and incorporate feedback through lightweight usability testing
- Build prototypes on a regular cadence and validate assumptions with target users
- Define data needs, integration points, and error states for the product experience
- Map user workflows and edge cases for complex, multi-step construction and design processes
- Design across different user types, including technical specialists and first-time operators with varying software fluency
- Run regular interviews with architects, engineers, and builders to uncover workflows, pain points, and unmet needs
- Document assumptions, evidence gaps, and research priorities for the product area
- Convert research into insights that influence the roadmap
- Partner with engineering to confirm technical feasibility before handoff
- Deliver developer-ready specs with annotated designs, acceptance criteria, and interaction details
- Work two or more sprints ahead of engineering so teams always have clear work to pick up
- Collaborate daily with engineers, product leadership, and cross-functional partners
- Present design choices in plain terms to engineers, leaders, and customers
- Align UX execution to company-wide Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) so experience improvements support bigger goals
Requirements
- 3+ years in UX design, product design, or a similar role
- Portfolio demonstrating end-to-end design work, including research through shipped product (not visual design only)
- Experience running user interviews and using qualitative research to drive design decisions
- Strong fluency in Figma (or similar) for wireframing, prototyping, and design systems
- Experience designing workflow-driven products with real constraints (not limited to consumer apps)
- Clear communication skills to explain design choices to engineers, leaders, and customers
- Comfort working through ambiguity, including defining the problem as well as solving it
Location and Reporting
- Onsite in Austin, TX
- Reports to the Director of Product
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in construction technology, architecture, manufacturing, robotics, or another hardware-adjacent domain
- Familiarity with 3D visualization, CAD tools, or spatial design interfaces
- Experience writing product specs or PRDs alongside design work
- Background in Jobs-to-Be-Done, continuous discovery, or similar product research frameworks
- Experience with design systems and component-based design patterns
