Job Description

ICON is hiring a UX/Product Designer I in Austin, TX to lead end-to-end UX for a core BuildOS product area.

Responsibilities

  • Own end-to-end UX work for tools that connect users to ICON construction technology, from discovery research through design handoff
  • Run customer interviews, map complex workflows, and translate findings into actionable design work
  • Create wireframes, interaction flows, and interactive prototypes in Figma (or a similar tool)
  • Test prototypes with real users and incorporate feedback through lightweight usability testing
  • Build prototypes on a regular cadence and validate assumptions with target users
  • Define data needs, integration points, and error states for the product experience
  • Map user workflows and edge cases for complex, multi-step construction and design processes
  • Design across different user types, including technical specialists and first-time operators with varying software fluency
  • Run regular interviews with architects, engineers, and builders to uncover workflows, pain points, and unmet needs
  • Document assumptions, evidence gaps, and research priorities for the product area
  • Convert research into insights that influence the roadmap
  • Partner with engineering to confirm technical feasibility before handoff
  • Deliver developer-ready specs with annotated designs, acceptance criteria, and interaction details
  • Work two or more sprints ahead of engineering so teams always have clear work to pick up
  • Collaborate daily with engineers, product leadership, and cross-functional partners
  • Present design choices in plain terms to engineers, leaders, and customers
  • Align UX execution to company-wide Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) so experience improvements support bigger goals

Requirements

  • 3+ years in UX design, product design, or a similar role
  • Portfolio demonstrating end-to-end design work, including research through shipped product (not visual design only)
  • Experience running user interviews and using qualitative research to drive design decisions
  • Strong fluency in Figma (or similar) for wireframing, prototyping, and design systems
  • Experience designing workflow-driven products with real constraints (not limited to consumer apps)
  • Clear communication skills to explain design choices to engineers, leaders, and customers
  • Comfort working through ambiguity, including defining the problem as well as solving it

Location and Reporting

  • Onsite in Austin, TX
  • Reports to the Director of Product

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in construction technology, architecture, manufacturing, robotics, or another hardware-adjacent domain
  • Familiarity with 3D visualization, CAD tools, or spatial design interfaces
  • Experience writing product specs or PRDs alongside design work
  • Background in Jobs-to-Be-Done, continuous discovery, or similar product research frameworks
  • Experience with design systems and component-based design patterns
