Job Description

The Product Designer role at Portfolio Creative supports expert users by translating complex scientific workflows into clear, powerful product experiences. You will partner with product managers, lead design end to end, and operate within continuous design-prototype-validation loops on a 12-month hybrid contract in Columbus, OH.

Role Overview

This is a hybrid position based in Columbus, OH with a 12-month contract and a high possibility of conversion to FTE. The role pays USD 45 per hour and is open to candidates with 3+ years of UX design experience.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with product managers as a thought partner to define problems, influence product direction, and investigate creative solution spaces beyond translating requirements.
  • Design user-centered interfaces that help complex scientific workflows feel effortless for expert audiences, while preserving the depth and capabilities users rely on.
  • Own the design process from early concept and wireframes through polished, engineering-ready handoff.
  • Work in fast, continuous loops where design, prototyping, and validation occur side by side.
  • Create multiple solution paths for complex workflows, moving past obvious or incremental improvements.
  • Build and maintain design systems that support consistency and help the team move quickly.
  • Initiate user research and convert insights into design decisions that improve the experience in measurable ways.
  • Promote usability and accessibility, staying current with UX trends, techniques, and technologies.

Requirements

  • 3 to 5 years of UX design experience shaping software products from concept through launch.
  • A degree in UX Design, Human-Computer Interaction, or a biological-sciences field, paired with significant design experience, or equivalent experience.
  • Strong proficiency in Figma, with a portfolio showing design thinking, problem-solving, and craft.
  • A track record of rapid prototyping to communicate and validate ideas, along with comfort working in fast, iterative Agile teams.
  • Experience building or contributing to design systems, including familiarity with design tokens and component libraries.
  • Enthusiasm for using AI tools across the design process, including research, ideation, rapid prototyping, and design-to-code workflows.
  • Working knowledge of user-centered design principles, usability, and accessibility standards such as WCAG.
  • Strong visual and interaction design skills with a detail-oriented approach to clarity in complex tools.
  • Clear communication and storytelling skills that help explain complex concepts to varied audiences.
  • Ability to think conceptually and creatively in complex or ambiguous domains, delivering high-quality work with speed and pragmatism.
