Creative Director, Editorial

Ballast Research is hiring a Creative Director, Editorial role for The Atlantic, overseeing the visual direction and brand expression across editorial products. This position manages the art department and leads creative work spanning design, illustration, and photography for The Atlantic’s journalism.

Location

• Prince, NY (onsite)

The role is based in New York City or Washington, D.C.

Compensation

• USD 200,000 - 275,000 per year

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee visual direction and brand expression across all editorial platforms, including the print magazine, website and app, podcasts, video, and live events
• Manage The Atlantic’s art department
• Lead the team’s work on design, illustration, and photography supporting The Atlantic’s journalism

Required Qualifications

• Demonstrated leadership capability, including creative vision, people-management experience, and the ability to define goals and execute against them
• Strong design and journalistic judgment, with the ability to work across both conceptual and reportorial approaches
• Well-developed organizational skills, including working effectively under deadlines and managing multiple concurrent projects
• Established relationships with photographers, illustrators, and other artists, along with an eye for emerging talent
• Adaptability to change and composure under pressure
• Clear communication skills and a collaborative mindset
• Motivation to work in a fast-paced and intensely demanding creative environment

Tools and Technologies

• Adobe Creative tools, including Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign/K4
