UI/UX Human Centered Design Specialist
Job Description
The UI/UX Human Centered Design Specialist will support the CMM program by creating user-centered designs for dashboards, reporting experiences, predictive analytics, and AI/ML interfaces. This role focuses on intuitive, accessible experiences aligned with Judiciary user workflows and federal accessibility and compliance expectations.
Key Responsibilities
- Design intuitive, accessible dashboards, self-service reporting interfaces, and predictive analytics screens for the CMM Reporting & Analytics Capability using Human-Centered Design (HCD) and usability best practices.
- Convert UX research, personas, and journey maps into high-fidelity prototypes, wireframes, and interface design specifications for development teams.
- Collaborate with BI Architects, data engineers, product owners, and developers to ensure visual designs align with data models, KPIs, and reporting requirements.
- Perform usability testing for dashboards and visualizations, including heuristic evaluations, card sorting, and A/B testing, and refine designs based on findings each sprint.
- Define and maintain visualization, navigation, and interaction design standards that support consistent, interpretable reporting and dashboard experiences and user adoption.
- Design the user experience for the Measurement Definitions and Decision-Support Package, presenting metrics and KPIs in a clear, decision-ready format.
- Evaluate reporting and analytics interfaces for Section 508 and WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility compliance.
- Support rapid prototyping and iterative validation of dashboard and reporting designs within Agile sprint cycles.
- Drive adoption by aligning navigation patterns and visual hierarchy with Judiciary user workflows.
- Contribute standardized UI components and templates to the shared CMM design system for reuse across reporting products.
- Design intuitive, explainable AI/ML-driven predictive analytics and decision-support interfaces so model outputs are interpretable to end users.
- Apply HCD principles to the presentation of AI/ML model outputs, including confidence indicators and recommendations, to support responsible AI adoption.
- Partner with AI/ML and data science teams to translate model capabilities into user-facing workflows aligned with federal responsible-AI requirements related to transparency, fairness, and risk mitigation.
- Conduct usability evaluations of AI/ML interfaces and incorporate feedback into iterative design improvements.
Required Qualifications
- MA/MS degree, or a Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Design, or a related field, with 10+ years general experience in information systems and 8+ years specialized experience in UI/UX design, including 5+ years in an HCD role supporting enterprise or government applications.
- Education may be considered in lieu of degree: HS (16+ years), AA/AS (14+ years), BA/BS (12+ years), Doctorate Degree/Ph.D. (9+ years).
- Expertise in usability testing methods such as heuristic evaluations, card sorting, and A/B testing, along with proficiency in design and prototyping tools including Figma, Sketch, Axure, Storybook, or similar tools.
- Working knowledge of Agile/SAFe delivery, iterative design integration, and DesignOps/UX governance practices.
- Familiarity with HTML5 and CSS3 and responsive UI behavior to collaborate with front-end developers.
- Experience designing for federal systems, including practical knowledge of Section 508 and WCAG 2.1 AA compliance.
- Strong presentation and communication skills (oral and written).
- Consultant mindset, ability to work with high level customer stakeholders, and demonstrated relationship-building.
- Experience applying industry tools, solutions, methods best practices, and emerging technologies.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, including the capacity to formulate and communicate improvement recommendations.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Relevant certifications listed as acceptable qualifications: Certified Usability Analyst (CUA) or Certified HCD Professional; SAFe Agile Practitioner (SPC or SSM); Section 508 Trusted Tester Certification; and/or UX Design or HCD Certification (NN/g, IDEO, or HFI).
