Job Description

Turn brand direction into lighting products guests can see and feel. This onsite Product Designer role in Minneapolis supports Target’s Owned Brands by designing and developing decorative lighting that moves from early concept through mass production. You’ll translate guest insights and emerging trends into commercially viable products, balancing creative ambition with real-world cost, manufacturing capabilities, quality, and scale.

What you’ll do

  • Research market opportunities by studying guest needs, design trends, materials, finishes, manufacturing techniques, and emerging lighting innovations.
  • Create original lighting concepts using sketching, 2D visualization, 3D CAD modeling, rendering, and physical prototyping.
  • Design across lighting categories including table and floor lamps, pendants, chandeliers, sconces, and other decorative lighting forms.
  • Develop well-resolved products with careful attention to proportion, scale, construction, materials, finishes, and details.
  • Own assigned products from concept through production while protecting design intent across development and manufacturing.
  • Produce clear CAD models, drawings, renderings, specifications, and presentations to align internal teams and external manufacturing partners.
  • Partner with Engineering, Technical Design, Sourcing, and manufacturing partners to ensure products are manufacturable, cost-effective, safe, and suitable for high-volume production.
  • Evaluate prototypes and production samples, identify design or construction issues, and provide direction to improve aesthetics, function, quality, and manufacturability.
  • Build a working understanding of lighting components and construction, including sockets, cords, switches, LEDs, drivers, diffusers, and other relevant electrical and mechanical parts.
  • Explore materials and manufacturing processes such as metal fabrication, casting, extrusion, glass, ceramics, wood, plastics, and mixed-material construction.
  • Coordinate with Merchandising to support assortment strategies, price points, brand positioning, and business objectives.
  • Collaborate with designers across Home to maintain a cohesive collection and consistent Owned Brand perspective.
  • Manage multiple projects and development timelines while communicating proactively with internal and external partners.

Qualifications

  • Four-year degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, or a related design field (or equivalent professional experience).
  • 3+ years of professional product or industrial design experience, ideally developing manufactured consumer products.
  • Portfolio showing strong product design thinking, three-dimensional form development, and products that progressed from concept to production.
  • Experience designing for scaled or mass production, with understanding of how design intent connects to manufacturing processes, cost, and quality.
  • Strong sketching, visualization, and presentation skills.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD and modeling tools such as SolidWorks, Rhino, Fusion 360, or comparable software.
  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite, including Illustrator and Photoshop.
  • Knowledge of materials, finishes, manufacturing processes, construction methods, and product assembly.
  • Experience developing and evaluating prototypes, samples, and production-ready designs.
  • Ability to communicate design intent clearly and collaborate with engineers, sourcing teams, merchants, vendors, and manufacturing partners.
  • Strong aesthetic judgment with exceptional attention to proportion, materiality, finish, and product detail.
  • Ability to independently manage multiple projects and respond to changing business needs.
