Product Designer, Consumer Verticals
Job Description
OpenAI’s Consumer Verticals team is building how ChatGPT becomes meaningfully more useful in areas that matter, including health, finance, and emerging agentic experiences. In this onsite San Francisco role, you’ll lead end-to-end design for new consumer experiences, balancing ambitious zero-to-one product thinking with detailed interaction and visual craft.
You’ll shape what ChatGPT should do in different domains while keeping the experience coherent and clearly OpenAI. The work emphasizes trust, safety, accuracy, and user agency, partnering across research, engineering, product management, safety, and domain experts.
What you’ll do
- Set product and design direction for purpose-built consumer experiences across verticals such as health, finance, and general consumer agents.
- Design and ship high-quality products, moving from early concepts and prototypes through interaction design to final visual execution.
- Define how ChatGPT behaves in different domains while preserving a consistent, distinctly OpenAI experience.
- Explore new interaction models for AI systems that can understand context, support complex decisions, and take action on a user’s behalf.
- Work closely with research, engineering, product management, safety, and domain experts to translate technical capabilities into useful and responsible products.
- Conduct and apply user research to understand unique needs, expectations, and risks within each vertical.
- Balance specialized domain requirements with reusable patterns that strengthen ChatGPT and accelerate future product development.
- Contribute to OpenAI’s broader design culture and help raise the bar for consumer product craft.
What you bring
- Substantial experience designing and shipping high-quality consumer software at scale.
- Exceptional UX, UI, and interaction design skills, with a high bar for craft across every stage of work.
- A highly generative product mindset: able to explore broadly, develop a strong point of view, and turn ambiguity into clear product direction.
- Experience leading zero-to-one initiatives or introducing new product categories, behaviors, or interaction models.
- Ability to simplify complex systems without removing the details users need to make informed decisions.
- Strong instincts for trust, safety, transparency, and user control, especially in consequential or sensitive experiences.
- Comfort moving between domain-specific problems and broader systems or platform thinking.
- Strong communication through compelling narratives and prototypes that drive alignment across design, research, product, and engineering.
- Interest in defining how AI-first consumer products look, feel, and behave as models become more capable and agentic.
