Principal Product Designer
Job Description
Hybrid role in Austin, TX where you’ll design end-to-end product experiences for maintenance engineers, field service technicians, and operations planners. This Principal Product Designer position combines ownership, research, AI and emerging technology thinking, and practical design system work, with an emphasis on accessibility and measurable impact in the field.
What you’ll get
- Flexible paid time off, including sick and holiday
- Medical, dental, & vision insurance
- 401K with company contribution
- Flexible spending accounts
- Life insurance and disability benefits
- Tuition assistance
- Community involvement and volunteering events
IFS supports flexibility and hybrid work to fit diverse needs and lifestyles, while building inclusive workplace experiences through community, connection, and belonging.
Responsibilities
- Own design for defined feature areas end-to-end, from problem framing through production-ready Figma files, with clear rationale for decisions
- Partner in a cross-functional squad with engineers and PMs, making real decisions together instead of executing on someone else’s brief
- Present design thinking confidently to stakeholders, addressing pushback with evidence
- Plan and run user interviews, JTBD analysis, and journey mapping independently, translating findings into clear design direction
- Use both quantitative signals and qualitative insight to drive iteration
- Design AI-driven features with an understanding of where AI helps and where it introduces risk, including prompts, fallbacks, and human-in-the-loop moments
- Bring perspective on how today’s interfaces may become obsolete and what should replace them
- Contribute to the IFS design system by proposing reusable components and patterns, not one-off UI
- Apply WCAG 2.1+ accessibility standards from the start, including edge cases, error states, and real-world data
Requirements
- 8+ years of end-to-end product design experience (discovery through shipped product) with evidence of real ownership
- Comfort running research end-to-end: planning the study, conducting interviews, synthesising findings, and shaping design direction
- Experience working in cross-functional squads with engineers and PMs, making decisions collaboratively
- Strong Figma skills and visual craft that supports your thinking
- Accessibility treated as a design constraint from the start, not a late-stage checklist
- Thoughtful understanding of what AI means for interfaces, beyond adding an AI feature to changing the design problem
- Ability to measure impact using signals like task success rates, support ticket volume, and adoption to guide the next iteration
Tools & standards you’ll use
- Figma
- WCAG 2.1+
Strong signals (optional)
- Experience shipping AI-driven features (prompts, fallbacks, human-in-the-loop moments)
- Familiarity with design tokens, contribution models, and designing for systems rather than individual screens
- Exposure to quantitative signals such as task success rates, funnel data, or A/B results, with a habit of using them
Salary: USD 133,000 - 170,000 per year.
