Job Description

Madeo offers the chance to lead web design work for mission-driven organizations, shaping user experiences and visual design across high-caliber websites. This Design Lead role blends creative craft with practical collaboration, so you can guide UX/UI direction, support design systems, and work alongside strategists, developers, and client teams. You’ll contribute to interactive report microsites, editorial experiences, and large organizational redesigns, with support for 100% remote work from home plus occasional retreats and events.

Compensation: $85,000 to $120,000 per year, with the range accounting for experience level and living location. The role requires working 10am to 6pm EST.

What you’ll do

  • Take a leading role in shaping user experiences and visual design for mission-driven websites.
  • Design interactive report microsites, editorial sites, and large organizational websites, while helping improve brand design systems for the web.
  • Make, explain, and defend sound design and UX decisions, contributing informed recommendations alongside UX strategists.
  • Collaborate closely with UX strategists, content strategists, other designers, web developers, and client teams across multiple project types.
  • Support larger client projects, smaller engagements, and ongoing work that delivers smaller improvements each month.
  • Participate in auditing the existing site and share recommendations across UX, UI, visual design, and content.
  • Independently research peer sites during research and discovery to identify opportunities.
  • Collaborate on collaborative design direction and wireframing with the content and UX strategist.
  • Establish overall creative and UX/UI direction with the broader team and the creative director as designs become more defined.
  • Produce a UI Kit and overall design system, defining interactions and transitions, and collaborate directly with front-end developers on execution.

How projects are structured

At any given time, you will typically work on a mix of a larger client project, a smaller engagement, and a few ongoing opportunities for continuous refinement. Work often begins with a research and discovery phase, including understanding the existing site and user needs, incorporating stakeholder interview insights, and independently researching peer experiences.

After discovery, you’ll move into collaborative design direction and wireframing with the content and UX strategist, evaluating UX options and making grounded recommendations. As the work progresses, you’ll help define creative and UX/UI direction with the team and creative director, then translate that thinking into a UI kit and design system for implementation.

What you bring

  • Demonstrated experience leading original web design for multiple clients.
  • Experience participating in UX decision-making on website projects, including evaluating options, identifying tradeoffs, and contributing recommendations alongside strategists.
  • Confidence working directly with clients, presenting work, fielding feedback, and speaking on behalf of design decisions.
  • A genuine interest in social impact and experience engaging with progressive nonprofit organizations.
  • Ability to work 10am to 6pm EST is required.
  • Living and working within commuting distance to NYC is preferred for occasional get togethers, but not required.

Benefits and support

  • Medical, vision, and dental insurance benefits
  • 401k matching of up to 5% of your salary
  • Discretionary annual bonuses (including bonuses to your 401k)
  • Flexible vacation days in addition to national holidays and team-wide vacations
  • 100% remote work from home supported with occasional retreats and events
  • If you’re in NYC: in-person design day workshops, team dinners, and design talks
  • 1 to 2 team-wide retreats per year
  • A work culture that prioritizes collaboration, learning, and growth
  • Charitable donation matching

Role alignment

This position is ideal for a web-focused designer with deep appreciation for visual and brand design. Madeo views websites as an expanded expression of brand, so you’ll collaborate across research, wireframing, and high-fidelity interactive UI craft, with a focus on usability and design system clarity.
