Job Description

Lead the visual direction and production workflow for NC State Magazine, from story development to final print-ready assets.

Responsibilities

  • Set the visual direction for each issue through cover and feature concepts and designs, aligning with NC State brand standards and the magazine’s established aesthetic.
  • Shape the editorial process by participating in story pitch meetings and providing feedback on stories and headlines to strengthen the connection between content and reader experience.
  • Translate stories into visual experiences by partnering with editors and the graphic designer to develop photography, illustration, and design elements that complement each story.
  • Drive magazine design from concept through final production by refining layouts and coordinating design adjustments for a cohesive, polished publication.
  • Supervise the graphic designer with creative direction and support to improve quality and maintain consistency across visual presentation.
  • Develop creative partnerships with freelance and in-house photographers and illustrators, identify new talent, and grow relationships to expand visual storytelling.
  • Coordinate print production as the primary contact with the printer, keeping production on schedule and addressing design-related needs.
  • Support final quality control by proofing, managing corrections, and completing final design review before going to print.
  • Maintain the magazine’s digital asset archive so images, illustrations, text files, PDFs, and completed issues remain organized and accessible.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Five years of experience leading editorial or publication design (preferably for a magazine or other print publication), including creating layouts and visual concepts from conception through final production.
  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite, especially InDesign, InCopy, Photoshop, and Illustrator.
  • Knowledge of print production and color management, including typesetting, color correction, color proofing, and offset and digital printing processes.
  • A strong portfolio showing artistic vision and visual storytelling, with examples demonstrating creativity, attention to detail, and the ability to apply design and brand standards across a publication.
  • Experience collaborating with writers, editors, designers, and other creative partners to meet deadlines, manage changing priorities, and maintain accuracy and quality in the final publication.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with AP style (plus).
  • Experience working in higher education or understanding of a land grant, research Tier One university environment.

  • Salary: USD 68,000 - 72,000 per year
