Art Director
Job Description
Future Publishing is looking for an Art Director to help shape Marie Claire’s visual identity across print, web, social, and newsletters. Based in New York, NY (hybrid), this role combines hands-on art leadership with day-to-day asset creation, ensuring creative direction stays consistent while projects move on schedule.
Role overview
You will oversee and manage the Art team, set visual direction through mood boards, and lead major deliverables across multiple channels. The position requires strong design direction experience, collaboration with editorial and production, and comfort working across both creative development and execution.
Key responsibilities
- Oversee and manage Marie Claire’s Art team, offering direction, guidance, and support across projects
- Build and present mood boards to determine the strongest visual approach for each brief
- Lead the creative process for two print issues per year, from editor conversations and story run-throughs through picture research, commissioning, layout design, and final execution
- Collaborate with production to confirm assets and final files meet required specifications and are delivered accurately
- Partner with the Social team to design and approve social-first graphics for cross-platform use
- Translate ideas into compelling visuals and present concepts with rationale and detailed context to editors
- Ensure creative work follows the appropriate editorial review and approval process, working with the Editor-in-Chief and/or relevant editors to incorporate feedback and secure final approval
- Conceptualize creative directions for cover stories, including mood boards and visual approaches for photoshoots
- Develop bespoke landing pages for digital issues and other programming as needed
- Maintain the brand’s visual tone across print, website, and social, alongside hands-on asset creation
- Manage day-to-day creative work across print, digital, social, and newsletters, staying hands-on throughout
- Work with all editorial desks to understand needs and visual objectives, manage multiple projects and priorities, and ensure deadlines are met
- Bring experience working on set, overseeing shoot visual execution and ensuring creative direction carries through
Requirements
- 7+ years of relevant experience, with emphasis on design direction
- Experience working on sets
- Experience creating social media assets
- Experience working on a print magazine
- Outstanding portfolio with a commitment to excellent work
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Strong attention to detail and the big picture
- Fluency in Photoshop and InDesign
- Willingness to work within the company’s editorial CMS

Compensation and location
- Location: New York, NY (hybrid)
- Salary: USD 95,000 - 100,000 per year
