Art Director
Job Description
The Crossing Church is seeking an Art Director in Chesterfield, MO (onsite) to lead creative work across weekend services, ministries, and digital channels. This full-time role blends creative leadership with hands-on execution, including design and video, while helping the Creative Team grow into a culture of trust, curiosity, collaboration, and excellent work.
What you’ll do
- Lead and develop The Crossing’s Creative Team with a shared commitment to strong creative work and a healthy team culture shaped by trust, curiosity, collaboration, spiritual maturity, creative courage, and ownership.
- Run regular team meetings including creative reviews, brainstorms, planning conversations, and project debriefs that strengthen both the work and the people behind it.
- Set overarching creative direction for visual communication and storytelling across weekend services, ministries, campaigns, events, print, video, social media, web, and other digital channels.
- Translate ministry goals, teaching themes, organizational priorities, and stories of life change into creative that is compelling, executable, and aligned with brand and audience experience.
- Protect and advance brand standards through clear creative expectations around creativity, storytelling, design, visual quality, clarity, editorial judgment, and brand alignment.
- Review deliverables and provide clear, constructive feedback that improves final output and develops the people responsible for it.
- Act as a working manager, contributing directly to creative development and stepping into design, video shoots, production problem-solving, and high-priority work when needed.
- Partner with the Communications Director to steward the Creative Team budget, including staffing needs, contractors, equipment, software, subscriptions, freelance support, and other creative resources.
- Build relationships with leaders across ministries to discover ways the creative team can serve those needs.
What you bring
- Demonstrated experience leading and developing creative professionals across multiple disciplines, setting clear direction, and building cohesive work for multiple channels and audiences.
- Strong graphic design knowledge and visual judgment, including typography, layout, composition, hierarchy, color, brand systems, and audience-centered communication.
- Working experience in video production and visual storytelling, including pre-production, filming, camera, lighting, audio, interview direction, editing workflows, and post-production review.
- Strong strategic-planning, project-management, communication, and budget-stewardship abilities.
- Strong creative communication, discernment, and craftsmanship.
- Creative judgment with confidence to set direction, make decisions, and give useful feedback.
- Curiosity and proactive thinking, with a willingness to notice opportunities and bring ideas forward.
- Collaboration and emotional intelligence, able to work across personalities, disciplines, and ministry priorities.
- A working leadership style that includes entering the details, contributing directly, and supporting the team when needed.
- Organization, dependability, adaptability, and the ability to bring calm and clarity in a fast-moving environment.
- Passion for using creativity, storytelling, and beauty to help people encounter Jesus.
Education and experience
- Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, visual communication, marketing, media production, advertising, communications, or a related field (equivalent professional experience will be considered).
- Ten or more years of progressive experience in art direction, creative direction, design leadership, communications, agency work, church media, nonprofit communications, or a comparable environment.
- Three or more years of direct experience leading, coaching, and developing creative professionals or creative project teams.
- A portfolio demonstrating high-level design, strategic creative thinking, brand stewardship, visual communication, and ideally experience across both design and video.
