Job Description

Hearst Media Services is hiring an Art Director to support Cosmopolitan and Seventeen. In this hybrid role in New York, you will shape visual identity and design standards across editorial, digital, and cross-platform creative work.

Role Overview

As Art Director, you will partner with the Creative Director to develop and refine the visual identity, creative vision, and design standards for Cosmopolitan and Seventeen. The work spans print, digital, social, video, and experiential platforms, with an emphasis on elevated editorial design, cohesive branding assets, and consistently strong execution.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Creative Director to evolve visual identity and design standards across Cosmopolitan and Seventeen for print, digital, social, video, and experiential initiatives.
  • Create editorial layouts and feature packages, including celebrity profiles and special projects, using sophisticated typography, imagery, and visual direction.
  • Produce graphics, logos, branding assets, and creative collateral for websites, social media, video series, live events, and other cross-platform initiatives.
  • Work with editors, writers, photographers, video producers, social teams, and special projects partners to concept and deliver innovative creative solutions.
  • Define, document, and improve creative workflows and design processes to support consistency, efficiency, and high-quality output.
  • Commission and art direct freelance illustrators and creative contributors while maintaining brand standards and editorial excellence.
  • Oversee image selection, color approval, and photo retouching direction in partnership with digital imaging specialists to ensure strong visual quality.
  • Deliver high-impact creative work across multiple priorities in a fast-paced editorial environment while meeting deadlines.

Required Qualifications

  • 6+ years of experience in consumer editorial design, including both digital and print platforms.
  • Demonstrated expertise in editorial design, typography, branding, and visual storytelling with refined creative sensibility.
  • Proven experience building brand identity systems, logos, templates, and cohesive visual languages across multiple platforms.
  • Strong conceptual thinking with the ability to translate editorial ideas into compelling creative executions.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to polished, high-quality work.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills to build effective partnerships across editorial, creative, and production teams.
  • Advanced proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud, including Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Bridge.
  • Strong knowledge of magazine design, photography, illustration, color management, and production workflows.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects under deadlines with creativity and precision.
  • Experience identifying opportunities to improve creative processes and streamline workflows.
  • Based in New York, NY with a hybrid schedule requiring four days per week in the office.

Compensation and Eligibility

The base salary range for this role is USD 101,000–122,000 per year. This position is not eligible for bonus or commission compensation.
