Magazine Art Director
Job Description
Salt Lake City, UT (Onsite) offers the chance to shape a magazine’s visual identity from concept through final production across print and digital. In this people manager role, you will establish and execute the magazine art vision approved by the First Presidency, guide a design team, and collaborate across disciplines to deliver clear, audience-focused storytelling.
What you’ll do
- Lead complex, end-to-end magazine design projects, providing leadership and decision-making for content creation teams, giving feedback throughout the publishing process, and overseeing all aspects of design work.
- Build relationships with service providers, vendors, and stakeholders to support high-quality outcomes.
- Develop design concepts that communicate a product, message, story, or experience while solving business and communication objectives.
- Collaborate with other creative disciplines to participate in or lead overall design, visuals, graphics, and strategy for assigned digital and print products.
- Create creative briefs and communicate the vision, strategy, and messaging goals with contracted vendors.
- Oversee application of the enterprise brand and style guide, adapting for audience-specific products while maintaining global brand standards.
- Work through multilevel approval structures to interpret business needs, research, and policy requirements to produce products and experiences.
- Maintain quality standards and schedules within a global operations structure.
- Prepare and deliver presentations both upline to executives and downline to project teams to share recommended ideas, concepts, and final products, following direction from executive councils and leaders.
- Evaluate analytics regularly for the assigned audience to inform short- and long-term product strategies worldwide.
- Manage the work of other employees (including mixed workforce), partner with HR on employee management, and recommend advancement, promotion, or other status changes within your reporting line.
What you bring
- Bachelor’s degree.
- 8 years of design experience, including at least 2 years in a leadership or senior design role.
- A professional portfolio (portfolio link required) showing strong typography, grid systems, long and short-form layouts, and dynamic digital or social campaigns.
- Proven people management experience leading content design teams, with a demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and drive excellence.
- Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite; experience with Adobe Premier, AfterEffects, and Figma is a plus, with versatility across print, web, mobile, video, and social.
- Expert verbal and written communication, including the ability to aggregate and distill information, write design proposals and plans, and present credibly to executive leaders and project teams.
- Strong competency across the full lifecycle of design project development and progress, working with cross-functional teams and policy governance stewards.
- Ability to lead new projects with limited detailed direction.
- Physical requirements may include sitting for long periods and using computer monitors/equipment.
