Art Director / Digital Designer

The Philadelphia Inquirer is seeking an Art Director / Digital Designer to shape compelling visual work across digital, print, and social platforms. In this hybrid role in Philadelphia, you will partner with newsroom teams to guide visual direction, build story-specific design plans, and help bring both in-house and commissioned artwork to life.

Working across breaking coverage and longer features, you will move concepts through art direction and production, ensuring the final visuals are clear, engaging, and consistent across formats.

What you’ll do

• Design and art direct stories spanning news, features, and sports for online, print, and social media channels
• Pitch and art direct illustration from concept through final delivery, including creating in-house illustrations
• Collaborate with the visuals team to best visualize stories for the intended audience and platform
• Create visual stories independently and work with reporters and editors on assigned projects
• Contribute to an inclusive and positive work environment

What you bring

• Strong design fundamentals, with expertise in color and typography
• Experience with UX and UI design
• Storytelling skills aligned with journalistic craft
• Experience hiring freelance illustrators, plus the ability to create your own artwork
• Exceptional collaboration and communication skills
• 3+ years of experience in art direction, ideally within an editorially driven publication
• Expert command of Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign
• Experience with front-end development including HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
• Self-motivation, deadline focus, and the ability to adapt to change in a news environment
• Strong visual capabilities and a genuine interest in illustration, photography, typography, and design
