Art Director
Job Description
Blue Matter is hiring a hands-on Art Director to shape both visual and conceptual direction for pharmaceutical and life sciences creative, with a strong focus on accuracy, brand fit, and regulatory readiness. This is a remote role where you will balance art direction with direct execution, moving work from early concept through production and client delivery.
What you’ll do
- Lead the visual direction of projects, setting overall look, feel, and layout decisions while also executing design work directly
- Develop and deliver design concepts across multiple channels, including digital, dynamic or interactive materials, print deliverables, presentations, and other pharmaceutical marketing assets
- Partner with content strategists, copywriters, and account leads to keep visuals and messaging aligned
- Manage projects end-to-end, from concept through delivery, covering layout, refinement, production, and file handoff with accuracy and quality
- Share ideas and design rationale internally and with clients in a clear, confident manner
- Ensure creative outputs meet brand guidelines and regulatory requirements (including ISI, fair balance, references, and review preparation)
- Provide art direction and feedback to junior designers or freelancers as needed
- Contribute to concept development and brainstorming for new campaigns and pitches
- Collaborate with the Creative Director to maintain visual standards and raise creative quality
- Help build, maintain, and evolve internal brand visual standards, templates, and asset libraries
- Support broader creative team operations by taking on multiple responsibilities in a lean, fast-paced environment
Skills and experience
- 5+ years of experience in a creative or design-focused role (prior agency and pharma experience strongly preferred)
- High proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, especially InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop, plus expertise in Figma and PowerPoint
- Ability to translate strategy and content into visually compelling creative
- Experience designing for regulated industries, ideally pharmaceutical or life sciences marketing (market access experience is a plus)
- Proven ability to work within and adapt brand guidelines while adding original ideas and elevating the visual standard
- Strong organization and attention to detail, with the ability to juggle multiple projects and timelines in a fast-paced setting
- Clear communicator and enthusiastic collaborator who can accept feedback, refine work independently, and contribute ideas
- Portfolio showing creative thinking, layout excellence, and polished execution across both print and digital
Plus factors (preferred qualifications)
- Motion or interactive design experience (for example, HTML5, video, or banner animation)
- Experience creating or refining high-quality presentation decks in PowerPoint
- Exposure to new business development or pitch work
- Familiarity with the market access space and prior pharmaceutical creative experience
- Familiarity with the MLR process, including annotation and reference management
- Experience working in a startup or small agency environment
Compensation
Base salary range: USD 90,000 - 130,000 per year, depending on experience, with a generous incentive compensation structure.
