Job Description

AION is building infrastructure that powers the future of AI compute globally, and the design team partners closely with high-pedigree founders shaping technical and product strategy. If you enjoy turning ambiguous problems into clear UX flows, precise UI, and a living design system, this onsite role in San Francisco, CA gives you significant ownership and impact, supported by equity reflective of your contributions, competitive compensation, flexible work options, and wellness benefits.

What you’ll do

Turn ambiguous problems into clear flows, information architecture, and interaction models.
Design every state of every screen: empty, loading, partial, error, plus edge cases nobody listed.
Own the visual layer, including typography, layout, colour, iconography, and hierarchy.
Specify interactions and motion precisely enough for engineers to ship them as designed.
Build and evolve the design system.
Review what ships at 1× and 2×, catching details like 1 px misalignment, incorrect easing, and clipped labels.
Test with real users, then iterate until nothing important is left to remove.

What you bring

6+ years in product design, with complex products shipped end to end.
Strong user research experience, including interviews, contextual inquiry, and usability testing, planned and run by you and turned into decisions.
Ability to frame problems by defining user needs, jobs to be done, and success measures before drawing screens.
Experience mapping end-to-end journeys, using journey maps and service blueprints that include every touchpoint, handoff, and failure path.
Task flows and wireframes that cover branches, edge cases, and errors, tested before visual design.
Information architecture skills: content models, navigation, and labelling, validated with card sorts and tree tests.
Interaction design strengths: mental models, affordances, feedback, and system status, consistent across the product.
Evaluation experience through heuristic reviews and usability metrics such as task success, time on task, and error rate.
Visual hierarchy built with one clear focal point per screen using scale, weight, contrast, and space.
Typography expertise: type scales, optical sizes, tracking adjustments, tabular figures, and layouts that hold up at larger text sizes.
Layout execution with grids, a strict spacing scale, pixel-grid alignment, and optical corrections where visuals look off even when measurements are right.
Colour systems for light and dark themes, using perceptually even palettes in OKLCH or Display P3.
Depth and materials understanding: elevation, shadows, translucency and blur, continuous corner curves, and concentric radii to show interactivity.
Component-state thinking for default, hover, pressed, focus, selected, disabled, loading, and error.
Design systems craft: primitive and semantic tokens, variables and modes, components with real variants, and documentation teams can use.
Iconography consistency: a common grid, stroke and corner language, and icons readable at small sizes.
Motion design with springs, fluid interruptible motion that follows the finger, and clear choreography of what moves first, follows, and leaves.
Deep knowledge of desktop, web, and mobile conventions, plus judgement for when to break them.
Accessibility designed in from the start to WCAG 2.2 AA, including contrast, focus order, larger text, reduced motion, and screen-reader labels.
Expert Figma skills: variables and modes, component properties, auto layout, advanced prototyping, and Figma Motion.
Ability to use After Effects, Rive, or ProtoPie when an interaction needs to be felt rather than described.

Designing for AI at AION

Design interfaces for output that is non-deterministic, streamed, and sometimes wrong.
Create patterns that keep people in control: review, correction, undo, and honest failure states.
Build trust through clarity, not decoration.
