Mayo Clinic College of Medicine & Science is seeking a UI/UX Designer to help shape immersive XR applications and conversational AI interactions through iterative prototype testing and user research. This hybrid role is based in Rochester, MN, with a work approach that blends remote collaboration and on-site partnership within 100 miles of the Mayo Clinic campus.
In this position, you will contribute across the design process from early wireframes and mockups to device-appropriate interaction patterns, accessibility-focused UI solutions, and developer-ready specifications. You will also help advance user-centered practices across Mayo Clinic websites, applications, products, and services.
Key responsibilities
- Contribute to all stages of the design process, including wireframing layouts, creating mockups across multiple screen sizes, and designing and refining conversational AI interactions.
- Represent users by applying interface best practices across device types, with a focus on accessibility.
- Participate in user experience research to validate design solutions against user needs and goals.
- Use UX findings and brand identity to develop design patterns that support both visual quality and a strong user experience.
- Collaborate with team members and stakeholders to improve navigation schemes, interaction patterns, and digital storytelling.
- Build familiarity with a learning management system and partner with content contributors to create immersive experiences.
- Create and adapt design specifications for developers, accounting for feasibility and performance constraints.
- Apply spatial interaction design concepts, including UX considerations for comfort and motion sickness, and interaction methods such as hands, controllers, gaze, and voice, along with XR accessibility.
- Support continuous improvements in user experience through user testing, research-related testing, and feedback review sessions.
- Stay current with UX best practices, evolving digital standards, modern interaction design principles, and audience-specific UX insights while learning new skills as needed.
- Develop deep empathy for the experiences of current and prospective learners and apply a user-centered design approach to improve and innovate Mayo Clinic digital offerings.
- Create conceptual models, wireframes, and interactive prototypes to test usability and communicate concepts to stakeholders.
- Define navigation and interaction systems, including site structures, navigation flows, user interfaces, and hierarchies.
- Proactively communicate status updates to stakeholders throughout the design process.
- Persuasively present design decisions and explain how they support user needs and business objectives.
- Implement Mayo Clinic visual identity assets across a range of environments and apply the institutional design system to align interfaces with brand identity while serving user requirements.
- Work with HTML, CSS, and content management systems to help implement brand identity across internal and external websites.
- Deliver visual designs and interface specifications that inform UI engineering colleagues, and collaborate with content publishing and UI engineering to ensure design intent is accurately translated into the final product.
- Evangelize user-centered design standards, review final designs for consistent adherence to guidelines, mentor and educate content publishing team members, and champion an inclusive, accessible, user-centered approach.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in UI/UX design, Interaction Design, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Graphic design, Multimedia Arts, or a related field.
- At least 5 years of experience producing user interface design with demonstrated impact is strongly recommended.
- Expert skills in UI design methods, including prototyping, interaction flow diagrams, wireframes, and interface specifications.
- Strong visual design acumen.
- Experience in, or willingness to learn, design for XR/AR/VR, 360 Video, 3D software and game engines (Unity, Unreal, etc.) is preferred.
- Experience designing AI interactions is preferred.
- Up-to-date knowledge of modern digital and interaction design principles and trends, with strong communication and presentation skills to articulate complex design problems and solutions.
- Experience in learning design and a portfolio demonstrating deliverables throughout the design process for products/websites is recommended.
- Health care or higher education experience is a plus.
- Experience using user interface design tools such as Sketch, Figma, or Adobe XD.
- Experience with HTML, CSS, and the basics of front-end web development.
- Ability to address accessibility concerns for digital products, including optimizing for assistive technologies.
- Experience in educational technology, healthcare, or simulation-based design is highly valued.
- Knowledge of WCAG Accessibility Standards is required.
- Portfolio demonstrating a range of immersive projects, ideally with cross-platform applications or AI-enhanced designs.
